Children and Martial Arts
Some children can learn a martial art as early as 4 years old, depending on the maturity of the child. We give your child a free evaluation at a trial class. Five years old is usually the normal age to start training, as their attention span and physical abilities are more developed.
Discipline and concentration are emphasized in our classes, children learn to follow verbal instructions, respect authority and sportsmanlike conduct. We recommend at least three classes per week to make steady progress.
If your child is overly shy you may want to try a few private sessions until he or she is more familiar with our routine. We treat children with respect and firmness.
Discipline at home
Parents must make a commitment to their child and to the studio to come often for classes. Some times children get lazy and prefer to stay home playing games or watching television, this is the time when parents must be firm and show them that once a decision to do something is made, one must follow through.
Although exceptions must be made for homework or special projects, it is damaging to the child's concept of discipline if the parents are soft and easily give in to silly excuses. This will soon extend to other areas of their lives, when something gets a little difficult, it is time to quit.
If the parent persists this phase will soon pass and the child will mature and understand that patience and discipline pay off at the end. This understanding affects every area of the child's life at school, in other sports and in the future.
